The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is Toyota’s first foray into the mid-size SUV segment, and has been co-developed with Maruti Suzuki, which also has a sister model called the Grand Vitara. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder is powered by hybrid-only petrol engines – there is a 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid sourced from Maruti and Toyota’s own 1.5-litre petrol strong-hybrid. The petrol mild-hybrid engine, in manual guise, also gets an all-wheel drive option. The strong-hybrid engine only comes mated to an e-CVT transmission. It rivals the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Nissan Kicks and MG Astor; and the Grand Vitara as well, of course.

Vehicle Description

Toyota announced the prices for select variants on 9 September. The prices for all other variants were revealed on 28 September while the prices will be announced shortly for the CNG variant.

The self-charging strong-hybrid electric version is powered by a 1.5-litre engine with THS (Toyota Hybrid System). This engine gets an e-drive transmission. The petrol engine produces 91bhp and 122Nm of torque, while the electric motor generates 79bhp and 141Nm of torque. Combined, the strong-hybrid version produces 114bhp. Some unique highlights of the self-charging strong-hybrid electric version include the ability to run on pure EV mode, deliver higher fuel efficiency, low emission levels, no external charging needed, and responsive power and quieter drive.

On the other hand, the Neo Drive version is powered by Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K-series engine with Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) technology which generates 101bhp and 135Nm of torque. This engine will be offered in five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission options. Interestingly, this engine is exclusively offered with an all-wheel-drive option.

Exterior design:

The Toyota Urban Cruiser will be available in seven monotone and four dual-tone colour (black roof) options. It includes Cave Black, Sporting Red (optional black roof), Speedy Blue (optional black roof), Enticing Silver (optional black roof), Cafe White (optional black roof), Gaming Grey, and Midnight Black.

The fascia is highlighted by split LED headlamps which are complemented by a single slat gloss-black grille with a chrome insert. Further, it gets a honeycomb design for the air dam and contrast-coloured front skid plate. The side profile is highlighted by a black roof, dual-tone alloy wheels, and wide wheel arch claddings. The rear profile is highlighted by a chrome strip on the boot lid and a C-shaped LED pattern.

Interior and features:

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder gets a dual-tone black and brown theme with silver colour inserts. For a premium feel, it gets soft-touch material on the lower portion of the dashboard and the door pads. The dashboard is highlighted by a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Depending on the variant, the feature list includes automatic climate control, connected car technology, and a 360-degree camera.
