Hyundai i20 diesel discontinued: Here's the only diesel premium hatchback in India in 2023

Feb 18, 2023

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) has now axed the 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that was offered with the i20 due to the upcoming Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms that come into force on April 1, 2023. This move makes the i20 a petrol-only offering like most of the other premium hatchbacks in India.

However, there's one car in the segment still offering a frugal diesel motor as an option, i.e. Tata Altroz. Tata Motors offers the Altroz with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder Revotorq oil burner that produces 90 PS of maximum power and 200 Nm of peak torque. The Altroz diesel is currently available with a 5-speed manual transmission only, and is claimed to return a fuel efficiency figure of 23.64 kmpl.

Apart from the diesel motor, the Altroz is currently also available with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron NA petrol engine rated at 88 PS/115 Nm, as well as a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol motor that generates 110 PS power and 140 Nm torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard with both, while the naturally aspirated engine is also available with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic.

That said, the Tata Altroz' price was recently increased along with the Punch, Tiago and Tigor. Know more about the latest price hike here -

Talking about the i20, it will now be available with the 1.2-litre four-pot nat-asp engine producing 83 PS (88 PS with IVT) and 115 Nm, and a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 120 PS power and 172 Nm torque. The former can be had with a 5-speed MT or an IVT auto, while the latter is now available with a 7-speed DCT as standard, after the recent discontinuation of the 6iMT.
