Nexon CNG Unveiled at Bharat Mobility Expo 2024 by Tata Motors

February 1st, 2024

Tata Motors has introduced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) variants for all its petrol models, including the Nexon. The Nexon CNG was unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024 and is set to be launched in the next quarter. Despite maintaining its original design, the Nexon CNG is distinguishable by a CNG badge, signifying its inclusion in the Nexon ICE range.

The Nexon CNG will be a trailblazer in India, combining turbo petrol power with CNG as its energy source. The engine, which normally produces 118bhp/170Nm, is expected to yield approximately 100bhp/160Nm in CNG mode. Currently, Tata offers only a six-speed manual gearbox, but given the introduction of a CNG Automatic Transmission (AT) for the Tiago and Tigor, a similar option is anticipated for the Nexon in the future.

This development positions Tata to compete effectively with Maruti Suzuki, offering two CNG-enabled petrol engines. Tata's advantage lies in providing a two-pedal setup with CNG power, distinguishing it from Maruti Suzuki's offerings.

To address the common concern of reduced boot space due to CNG cylinders, Tata employs twin-cylinder technology, splitting the CNG tanks into two segments and placing them lower in the boot. Despite a standard Nexon having a boot capacity of 382 litres, the Nexon CNG's boot space is slightly reduced to 230 litres. The combined CNG tank capacity is 60 litres.

Tata is likely to offer the Nexon CNG in various variants, including Smart, Creative, and a fully-loaded Fearless Plus variant. The latter will feature advanced technologies like level-1 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), a 360-degree camera, connected car technology, and Highline Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

In terms of pricing, Tata traditionally charges a premium of Rs 80,000 for CNG variants over their standard petrol counterparts. The Nexon CNG is expected to be competitively priced in the range of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 16 lakh, depending on the variant. It will face competition from Maruti Brezza CNG, Maruti Fronx CNG, and the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor CNG.
