Toyota is trying to make a name for itself in the compact SUV segment and will be launching the Urban Cruiser Icon SUV in the international markets. The global debut is scheduled on May 15. It is expected to be a fresh SUV without any derivation from the Urban Cruiser Hyryder sold in India. Let’s see what we know:

D03B

This SUV is codenamed D03B and will be underpinned by the Daihatsu DNGA platform. It might borrow some features from its siblings Avanza & Raize as they share the platform. Some other cars with the same platform are running in ASEAN markets like Indonesia as well.

Toyota has gained some attention with the ‘Icon’ naming but that might not be the final name. They might change the name during the launch and sell it with different names in different markets. For instance, it might be called ‘Yaris Cross’ in the Indonesian markets which is different as that car is based on a different platform and already available in international markets.

Powertrain & Dimensions

It might share similar engine options with its siblings sharing the same platform such as Raize. Urban Cruiser Icon might be powered by a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or a 1.0-litre turbo petrol like Raize. However, a 1.5-litre petrol engine is speculated with some hybrid technology.

It is expected to be around 4.3 meters with a wheelbase of around 2655mm similar to the Avanza. As compared to its previous competition it is about the same length but longer wheelbase than the Creta.

India Launch?

Coming to its arrival to Indian shores, it might be unlikely. Toyota might not launch the new icon SUV in India as they already have Hyryder which has been driving good sales consistently.

Also, they have massive pending orders for the Innova Hycross & Crysta with a significant waiting period ranging between 6 months and going up to a year. Toyota also has its collaboration going on with Maruti and supplies Grand Vitara to them. This is another factor to consider Icon’s launch in India.
