Temporary Suspension of Deliveries: Toyota Puts a Hold on Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux Dispatches in India

February 1st, 2024

Toyota Suspends Dispatch of Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux in India Due to Certification Irregularities In a surprising turn of events, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced the temporary suspension of despatches for the popular Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux utility vehicles in India. The decision comes in light of irregularities discovered during the horsepower output certification test on the diesel engines of these models. The affected vehicles collectively account for almost a third of Toyota India's sales.

The irregularities specifically relate to the 'smoothing' of power and torque curves, according to a TKM spokesperson. However, it's emphasized that these irregularities do not lead to any over-stating or over-claims on horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values. Importantly, the spokesperson assures that this issue has no impact on the emissions or safety of the affected vehicles. Despatches have been temporarily halted, but TKM will continue production, take new orders, and carefully manage the delivery process for existing orders.

Toyota Motor Corporation, which commissioned Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) for engine development, explained that during certification testing, electronic control units (ECU) with different software were used, aiming to present smoother and less varied results. The affected engines are used globally in ten models, including six in Japan. TKM is working with relevant authorities to reconfirm the data used for certification, and Toyota deeply apologizes for any inconvenience caused to customers and stakeholders. The incident highlights the critical importance of maintaining rigorous certification processes, and Toyota pledges to undertake appropriate measures to address the situation.
